GUIDED AMPHITHEATRE DAY HIKE – NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG
The spectacular Amphitheatre in the uKhahlamba World Heritage site, towers above Natal at 3000m above sea level. The Drakensberg escarpment’s steep walls, great valleys and pinnacles face roughly East and the Lesotho Highlands fill the horizon to the West.
The trail passes the mighty Sentinel, the highest free standing peak in the Northern Drakensberg, contouring the way to the base of the chain ladders. We use these iron ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sources Plateau, source of many of South Africa’s rivers including the Tugela which winds its way down to the Indian Ocean near Durban.
From the edge of the Drakensberg, there are spectacular views of the Amphitheatre starting from the Sentinel, curving round to Devils Tooth and Eastern Buttress including the Tugela falls which disappears into the vast valleys below. This sensitive & pristine wilderness area is an absolute must in the Drakensberg.
TUGELA GORGE HIKE – ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG
From The Royal Natal National Park we explore the Tugela Gorge with its massive overhangs and beautiful rock pools. The hike takes place in the foot hills of the colossal Amphitheatre and offers incredible views of the Sentinel and Devils tooth as you wind along the river course. The hike is relatively flat and follows the Tugela River up towards the mountains. The sandstone gorge is a riot of colours and forms a giant frame for the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, the most photographed mountain feature in the Drakensberg. We enjoy lunch in the cool natural forest or in winter, in the sun perched on giant boulders.
SURPRISE RIDGE HIKE – ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG
The spectacular view from Surprise Ridge is just one of the breathtaking rewards on this full day trail. Along this scenic route that you’ll encounter The Grotto, a cavern carved in the sandstone rock with a beautiful waterfall cascading through it, Fairy Glen, a delightful area of tranquil forest and streams, Sunday Falls which cascades over the sandstone ridges and the ever present Amphitheatre towering above you. A delightful hike in a magical part of the Drakensberg.
