THE WHALE TRAIL – DE HOOP NATURE RESERVE SOUTH AFRICA’S CAPE COAST – FIVE DAYS
Our guided Whale Trail is arguably South Africa’s best Slack Packing Trail. The trail traverses the De Hoop Nature Reserve, situated on the Cape coast and boasts unique fynbos and pristine coastal scenery. This is great for hikers who enjoy the freedom of hiking without hassle. The slackpacking hike is guided by GoTrekking Africa, we also transfer your luggage from one point to the next, arrange accommodation and prepare delicious meals.
The De Hoop reserve is a classic example of natures ability to weave diverse elements & unlikely habitats into a rich tapestry of unrivalled splendor. This unspoiled wilderness area was granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status for it’s magnificent natural beauty & concentration of rare endemic fynbos. Join GoTrekking Africa for a 5 day exploration of the diverse Cape Floral Kingdom & coastal marine reserve.
Initially the hike winds through rare fynbos, over lime stone hills & rugged sandstone where the highest point in the trail, Potberg hill 611m allows you uninterrupted views of the Langeberg mountains, coastal plains & turquoise ocean. The fynbos & protea are plentiful, August to October is the best time to enjoy the spring flowers. If you’re lucky, Cape Mountain Zebra, rare Bontebok or the endangered Cape Vultures may be seen on the trail.
The next 3 days are a varied exploration of the wind sculpted coastal cliffs, white sandy beaches and intertidal pools bristling with sea creatures. If you’re joining us from June to December it’s very likely that you’ll be able to spot the Southern Right Whales nursing their young in the clear bay in easy view of the shore, dolphins are seen throughout the year. The quaint Cape style cottages are all spacious and very comfortable, they contain beds, mattresses, hot showers and your GoTrekking Africa guide will prepare all meals for you while you sit back and enjoy the views of the mountains or ocean from the well appointed cottages. The trail includes 5 nights of accommodation, the first night is spend in the reserve and hiking starts the following morning, this allows you plenty of time to travel to De Hoop Marine Reserve.
The trail is beautiful year round. Whale watching from June to December. Fynbos flowers are best from July-Octoberber. A popular trail, usually booked a year in advance, but ask us for your dates.
The closest airports are George and Cape Town. The closest big town is Swellendam on the N2.
